Pete Yorn's 2001 musicforthemorningafter was easily one of the best albums of that year. A pleasing blend of slightly-down trodden, acoustic-based rock with touches of Springsteen, The Stone Roses, and even The Smiths, Yorn's debut catapulted him close to the mainstream. The D Man saw Elbow open for Yorn at old Club DV8, and while the crowd scratched their heads during the British band's set, they were definitely feeling Yorn's California-via-Jersey thing. (At this point, I should mention that the Mrs. thinks Yorn is super hot).
Since then, Yorn has toured consistently and built a solid fan base with follow-ups The Day I Forgot and Nightcrawler. Yorn's second album was very solid, if not slightly underrated, while his third effort, although decent, was perhaps a little overproduced and unsuccessful in looking for new musical space. (When we saw him play at Bricks, my wife said he was totally hot).
On new album Back & Fourth, Yorn teams with Bright Eyes producer Mike Mogis and rejuvenates his sound with a set of mellow strummers brimming with melody. And word has it that Yorn is teaming with Scarlet Johannson (yes, that Scarlet) for a record of duets. Yorn will be in town on August 16th and The D Man will be there for his fourth time around. (Yep, you guessed it, still hot).
