Five Things

Some random observations from the past couple days.
  • "Welcome to the Plastic Beach" is Snoop Dogg's best track since his Nineties heyday. One of several great songs from Gorillaz' excellent new album.
  • Drive By Trucker's The Big To Do is another solid collection of ragged country-rock stories.
  • Cannot get this song out of my head. Been four months.
  • Go is very good.
  • The D Man is bummed that he missed Record Store Day on Saturday. Good deals on records. Special releases. Cool kids and posers alike hanging out just to be a part of the scene. But someone has to work and earn the cash to keep the record stores alive in the day and age of digital. So is The D Man's contribution.

D Man,

I'm going to have to pick up Plastic Beach this week.

Lately, I've been listening to Pufferfish's Swell. Have you heard it yet?

And I couldn't agree with you more about supporting local record stores—digital downloads suck!

Definitely pick up Plastic Beach. A great record that sounds like 2010 more than anything else I've heard this year.

I will have to check out Pufferfish.

Just to make sure Christopher Cross stays in your head the entire year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQeqmNbA2Hs&feature=PlayList&p=8362823C64702EC7&playnext_from=PL&index=0&playnext=1

This song reminds me of riding in the car with my mom and brothers in the early 80's while running errands. That and the classic Hawaii episode of Growing Pains where Mike Seaver falls in love with a native.

The D Man does not care what anyone says, that guitar intro in "Sailing" is pure awesomeness. Gets me every time.

D Man,

Have you seen this article on RSD in the Atlantic? Apparently, the founder of RSD believes that the movie "High Fidelity" is at least partly to blame for the decline of independent record stores. Preposterous, I say. In any event, it's an interesting article on RSD.

(As an aside, the book "High Fidelity" is much better than the movie. Have you read Hornby's new one, "Juliet, Naked," yet? If not, you should definitely check it out.)

Keep up the good work!

Desmond

Do music lovers still need record stores? True ones do, but creeps like this author should stick to the illegal downloads ha-ha.
