Song of the Week

Gemini

Jack Tatum sounds like the name of a linebacker. But this dude from Blacksburg, Virginia, pays sensitive homage to that starry-eyed vein of dream pop first perfected in the Eighties by some of indie-rock's finest. Check out Wild Nothing's "Summer Holiday" from debut Gemini, complete with reverbed falsetto vocals and an introspective guitar line. Sounds just like it should--nostalgic and gorgeous.

D Man,

I'm from Southwest VA (Roanoke, to be exact), and it's sure good to see someone from the Blue Ridge region making a mark on the indie scene. I love his sound for all the reasons you list, especially the little touches of Johnny Marr. (By the way, The Smiths, in my opinion, is the most underrated band of the '80s.)

One last thing: How about some love for The Roots' new album, "How I Got Over"? To be sure, they are not quite as good as they were on "Things Fall Apart" or "Phrenology." But they are still the best hip-hop group out there. And they are great on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. So, do yourself a favor and check out their latest effort.
